A shovel is a small spade that is used for various purposes around the house as well as in industrial and commercial contexts. It is traditionally made of a wooden handle and an iron or a metal scoop that is used to pick up objects like sand, gravel, stones, leaves, etc from the ground and transfer them in to a container, like a wheelbarrow, or into a pile. Similarly, it can also be used to fill in ditches or ruts in roads or pavements with sand or clay.
Shovels come in a variety of sizes and manufacturing materials. Plastic shovels have quite recently fast replaced the traditional wood and metal spades of yesterday, as they are cheaper and quicker to manufacture in modern factories by cracking crude oil and forming synthetic polymers. Usually the plastic shovel will have a metal or wood handle, and a heavy duty plastic scoop. The two pieces are held together by interlocking joints. Or the complete shovel may be made out of a single, unbroken piece of plastic. This usually works for smaller shovels, like toy shovels for children’s play sets or gardening shovels that are used to change the soil in individual garden pots. The load on the scoop is smaller, and so a non breakable plastic handle can easily bear the weight of the soil. For heavier materials, for example cleaning snow out of a driveway, you would generally need a plastic shovel with a wooden or metal handle, as a slim plastic handle can easily be bent under the weight of the snow with even a moderate heave upon it.
Plastic shovels are commonly used in chemical plants by workers to scoop up various chemical compounds from containers and transfer them into other vessels. This is because most shovels are made from non-corrosive, non-degradable plastic that can resist the impact of reactive chemical materials, acids, and alkalis.
Plastic shovels are also used in livestock and poultry farms to pick up animal feed or manure, and on agricultural land to transfer grains and soil. Due to their small size, they can easily be utilized inside cramped spaces, like a chicken coop. Their light weight means that they are also easier to handle by people of various ages and body sizes working on the farm.
Additionally, these shovels come in a variety of colors, unlike traditional wood or metal spades and shovels. Yellow, lime green, bright red, navy blue, and pure white coatings make the shovels easier to spot in a home garden or storage shed, while also giving the shovel an attractive look.
The only disadvantage of using a plastic shovel is that it can snap quite suddenly when subjected to a large load. Although most shovels are made from heavy, industrial grade plastic, some may break under intense loads, or when used for purposes other than shoveling.
A telescopic plastic snow shovel, a recent, improved model of the traditional snow shovel, allows the length of the shovel’s handle to be adjusted so that the same shovel can be used effectively by people of different heights. Ergonomic shovels, on the other hand, are designed for general users based on average body sizes and heights.
