Plastic shovels
Plastic shovels are small spades that are used for gardening, as well as in industrial and commercial contexts. Plastic shovels are hugely popular these days, but they were originally made with a wooden handle, and an iron or a metal scoop, and used to pick up objects like sand, gravel, stones, leaves, etc from the ground and transfer them in to a container, like a wheelbarrow. Similarly, they can also be used to fill in ditches or ruts in roads, or pavements.
Plastic shovels versus metal-and-wood shovels
Plastic shovels come in a variety of sizes and manufacturing materials, from hi-tech plastics that are virtually indestructible, to children’s play plastic shovels.
Plastic shovels have quite recently fast replaced the traditional wood and metal spades of yesterday, as they are cheaper and quicker to manufacture in modern factories, by cracking crude oil and forming synthetic polymers. Usually plastic shovels will have a metal or wood handle, and a heavy duty plastic scoop. The two pieces are held together by interlocking joints.
Or the complete plastic shovels may be made out of a single, unbroken piece of plastic. This usually works for smaller shovels, like toy shovels for children’s play sets or gardening shovels that are used to change the soil in individual garden pots. The load on the scoop is smaller, and so a non breakable plastic handle can easily bear the weight of the soil. For heavier materials, for example cleaning snow out of a driveway, you would generally need a plastic shovel with a wooden or metal handle, as a slim plastic handle can easily be bent under the weight of the snow, with even a moderate heave upon it.
Uses of plastic shovels
Plastic shovels are commonly used in chemical plants by workers to scoop up various chemical compounds from containers and transfer them into other vessels. This is because most plastic shovels are made from non-corrosive, non-degradable plastic that can resist the impact of reactive chemical materials, acids, and alkalis.
Plastic shovels are also used in livestock and poultry farms to pick up animal feed or manure, and on agricultural land to transfer grains and soil. Due to their small size, they can easily be utilized inside cramped spaces, like a chicken coop. Their light weight means that they are also easier to handle by people of various ages, and body sizes, working on the farm.
Additionally, these shovels come in a variety of colors, unlike traditional wood or metal spades and shovels. Yellow, lime green, bright red, navy blue, and pure white coatings make the shovels easier to spot in a home garden or storage shed, while also giving the shovel an attractive look. Colour coding can also be used, for example, brown plastic for dirt, white plastic for snow, and so on, preventing messy jobs from ocurring.
